All the Penguins!

I mentioned in my last post that I am holding off on bringing out all our pink heart Valentine goodness in lieu of celebrating/studying all things winter. This included a study of the Arctic and Antarctic, and the Earth's poles (because locations perpetually covered in ice and snow seem very winter appropriate). Parker is especially fond of our Top and Bottom of the World library book we checked out.

Each time we read this page, Parker claims it's his favorite. Perhaps he will follow in Daddy's footsteps and be one of those scientist someday!

Max at the South Pole, January 2009

This week, Parker and I concentrated on our other Southern Hemisphere friends: Penguins!

I followed the same format I used for our Tot School Color Studies: We did a craft/activity, ate a themed food and read up on the subject.

Parker loves doing footprint paintings and always claims it "tickles like at the dentist!"

I had to really stretch my imagination for this hardboiled egg penguin - but Parker identified it right away so I'd call that a win! Also, he was stoked about all the olives.

Also, we set our purpose for our books - we were reading to learn new information about penguins!

Here's hoping you are staying warm! Happy winter!

  1. I didn't know Max went to the South Pole - that's so cool! I'm totally going to ask him more about it next time I see y'all.

    1. It's totally amazing! Do you know there are TWO South Poles?? A ceremonial one, and a magnetic one that moves each year!

  2. How cool that Max went to the South Pole! He got a great photo there too! I'm a big fan of penguins - I must check out those books! Mila has a few penguin books, but none of these. That penguin footprint is the absolute cutest and I think I'm going to have to try that. Have a great weekend!

    1. I love the idea of footprints on canvas, but we always need a couple tries so we do canvas paper (much cheaper!) that you can frame (and don't have to cry about when your toddler swipes his/her foot across the page).
